Walk for Pride!

Hey there, fabulous readers! Have you ever participated in a Walk for Pride event? Well, let me tell you about my recent experience at one such event on Saturday, 25th March 2023, at the Medsteps in the Gibraltar Nature Reserve.

A walk for pride is a gathering where you hike, walk or something similar. You ask the public for sponsorship so that if you complete the challenge, the money will be donated to the charity organising the event.

The early morning start was challenging, but the excitement and anticipation of doing something fun and new kept everyone going. We were greeted by a diverse and exciting group of people as we arrived at the location. The atmosphere was filled with positive energy and a sense of community spirit.

We witnessed community members pushing themselves in the blazing sun as we set off on the hike. Despite the heat, the conversation flowed. We chatted about everything from the beauty of nature around us to the history of Gibraltar's LGBTQ+ rights and general conversations.

The best part of the event was meeting new community members who are only growing and developing within the organisation. Seeing so many people coming together to show their support and celebrate diversity was amazing.

Of course, with the sun beating down on us, some people got tanned, and some got a little sunburnt, but it was all worth it, even with the sun cream!

One of the most heartwarming moments of the event was watching a mother and daughter attempt a challenging hike together. Seeing the love and support between them was beautiful as they helped each other through the steep steps. Moments like these give hope that future generations will fully normalise things for the LGBTQ+ community within every family.

As we reached the end of the hike, we all felt a sense of accomplishment, and the fact that we raised just over £500 for the event made it all the more special. The funds will be spent carefully on arranging aspects of the pride event later in the year.

In conclusion, we need more events like this. The LGBTQ+ community in Gibraltar rarely has the opportunity to meet in a safe space where we can enjoy the company of others like us and discuss topics that aren't always acceptable in public areas. Having a community around us to have these conversations is essential. As the Committee continues developing the local presence, we can look forward to more opportunities to meet, make friends, and celebrate diversity.

So, if you ever get the chance to participate in a Walk for Pride event or something similar, don't hesitate to join in.

It's an experience you'll always remember!
